Vulnerable Road Users NM (VRUnm), a local nonprofit organization, is leading the charge to educate and empower young drivers. With a mission to “educate and advocate so that all who use our roads are respected, safe, and accountable,” VRUnm focuses on equipping the next generation with tools and knowledge to make safer driving decisions.
At the heart of their outreach is the VRU Safe Driving Pledge (https://www.vrunm.org/vru-safe-driving-pledge), which encourages teens to commit to distraction-free, respectful, and attentive driving. Since the initiative launched late last year, a significant number of students have taken the pledge on the spot.
To further drive home the message, VRUnm incorporates hands-on experiences using virtual-reality driving simulators. These cutting-edge tools replicate real-world hazards and demonstrate how split-second decisions can lead to tragedy.
Local teens will have the chance to experience this firsthand at the upcoming DRIVE Back-to-School SAFE event, happening August 2–3, 2025, from 9 AM to 5 PM at Mayfield High School in Las Cruces.
Teens aged 15 and older are invited to test their skills in the simulator at no cost. The interactive experience offers personalized feedback and introduces real-life driving challenges to reinforce the importance of safe habits.
The event is made possible through the support of community partners who are committed to making New Mexico’s roads safer, including: Citizen’s Bank, Home Pros Remodeling, Las Cruces Homebuilders Association “Casa For a Cause,” Mayfield High School, Mesilla Driving Academy, Optimist Club of Las Cruces, and Prosper Real Estate.
